Maxwell used the principles of mathematics and physics to demonstrate that the rings must consist of many small particles.
Just as knowledge of SaturnΓÇÖs rings grew as telescopes became more powerful, so too did the number of SaturnΓÇÖs moons, as satellite after satellite was dis- covered. Tethys and Dione were found in 1684, while Rhea was discovered in 1672. Present knowledge about Saturn comes almost entirely from the 1980 and 1981 Voyager spacecraft flybys. This image was taken in 1981, when Voyager was still 22 million kilometers from Saturn.
